Celebrate Black History Month This February With Inspiring Programming and Performances at The Henry Ford

DEARBORN,Mich., Feb. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Black History Month at The Henry Ford is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and commit to a more just future.

Focusing on this year's national theme of African Americans and labor, each weekend at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation will feature speakers, performances and tours that celebrate the many ways Black innovators, activists and entrepreneurs have influenced our culture through their hard work.

Special appearances and inspiring performances include an afternoon of creativity with Phillip Simpson, artist and founder of the Smile Brand on February 9; The TeMaTe Institute for Black Dance & Culture and the Michigan Krump Movement both on February 15; and Marygrove's Repertory and Junior Companies on February 16. Also on February 16, musicians with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Cole and Harper Randolph, will perform live in the Museum Plaza at 11:30a.m. and again at 1p.m.

New this year, is a powerful tour through Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation that reveals Black history stories embedded in artifacts in The Henry Ford's collection. Reframing History: Uncovering Black Stories is available to visitors daily at 1p.m. in the museum plaza.

This year, marks the 60th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches, including Bloody Sunday, and the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Through the recent acquisition of the Jackson House, this history is more present in The Henry Ford's collections than ever before.

Beginning on February 22, visitors will have the opportunity to view We Shall Overcome: The 60th Anniversary of the Voting RightsAct, a new Collections Spotlight featuring artifacts that explore and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. This display also introduces guests to the rich story of Dr. Sullivan and Mrs. Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson, and how they opened their doors to close friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his allies in Dallas County as a place to rest and strategize the path forward to secure voting rights for all African Americans.
