Lawyer Tony Buzbee Allegedly Stole Money from Vulnerable Seaman Client, According To New Lawsuit Filed by Chehardy Sherman Williams
HOUSTON, March 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ --Law firmChehardy Sherman Williams has filed a lawsuit in the Harris County, Texas District Court alleging lawyer Tony Buzbee and his Firm stole money from Buzbee's client, Jose Bermudez.
Buzbee previously represented Bermudez in a lawsuit against his employer, Callan Marine, Ltd. Under the Jones Act, a federal statute, Callan Marine was required to pay Bermudez a series of 'maintenance and cure' payments intended to provide for his family and medical expense during litigation. The payments protect seafaring workers who qualify as "Seaman" under the Jones Act.
According to the lawsuit, Callan Marine made the required payments to Buzbee's Firm, which took on the responsibility to make the payments on to Bermudez. Instead, Buzbee's employees apparently diverted the payments to his firm's operating account and never informed Bermudez of the funds. Buzbee's firm paid portions of the funds to Bermudez as high interest loans. Bermudez's lawyers say the transactions appear to violate the Rules of Professional Conduct and their safeguards.
The lawsuit alleges that Buzbee's behavior is part of a pattern of conduct directed at vulnerable clients like Bermudez. The lawsuit references other former Buzbee clients including Adam Guidry, Matthew Ray Thompson, Jr., Laquille Tyner and Guadalupe Garza, who allege similar actions by The Buzbee Firm.
