Maplewood Senior Living and The Legacy Project, Inc. Expand Innovative Intergenerational Initiative Across Multiple States in the Nation

Upcoming Partnerships with George Washington University Brings College Students and Older Adults Together at Inspr Embassy Row, Washington, DC
BOSTON, Feb. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ --Maplewood Senior Living, a premier provider of luxury senior living, is proud to announce its partnership withThe Legacy Project, Inc. (TLP)an innovative intergenerational initiative born out of Tufts University and first introduced at Maplewood at Weston, MA. This collaboration then expanded to Maplewood at Cuyahoga Falls, OH, with Kent State University and is soon to start at Inspr Embassy Row in Washington, DC, with George Washington University and in Connecticut Maplewood communities through the University of Connecticut. This unique program fosters meaningful connections between college students and older adults, preserving life histories and building community across generations. Maplewood Senior Living encourages more universities to join TLP in their mission to combat loneliness, social isolation, and bridge generations.
Originally founded at Tufts University as a student organization in 2020 byArielle Galinsky,Katherine Furey, andWanda L. Schlumpf, TLP began as a passion project to bridge the generational gap through shared experiences and storytelling. Since its inception, TLP has created hundreds of one-on-one connections and published 50+ life stories in multiplebooks, enriching the lives of both students and seniors.
Following its successful launch at Maplewood at Weston, MA, and Cuyahoga Falls, OH, TLP will soon be expanding to Inspr Embassy Row, Maplewood's newest urban luxury senior living residence. They are exploring a potential expansion that would include a partnership with George Washington University, where students could engage in weekly visits with residents over 10 weeks. These connections will culminate in a publication consisting of a collection of residents' life stories.
"The Legacy Project is about more than preserving history; it's about building meaningful intergenerational relationships that bring joy and purpose to both students and older adults," said Adena McGowan, Senior Memory Care Director at Maplewood Senior Living. "By expanding this program to Inspr Embassy Row, we are fostering a dynamic community where wisdom is shared, perspectives are broadened, and connections flourish."
The need for initiatives like TLP is underscored by recent studies on social isolation. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reports that nearly 25% of adults aged 65 and older experience social isolation, while a Harvard study found that 61% of young adults reported feeling lonely during the pandemic. Programs like TLP address this issue by creating opportunities for meaningful human connection.
"We started The Legacy Project to amplify the voices of older generations and foster genuine connections between students and seniors," said Arielle Galinsky, co-founder of TLP. "The enthusiasm from both groups has been overwhelming, reaffirming the deep need for these relationships in our communities."
Wanda L. Schlump, co-founder and treasurer, shared her experience with Maplewood resident Judy, saying, "Judy and I formed a special bond that goes beyond the program-we still keep in touch. Our time together nurtured my creativity, and her wisdom has been invaluable."
