Our Kids Read Launches First Free Diverse Children's Bookstore in Baltimore

Grand Opening Set for Feb. 15 at Eastpoint Mall
BALTIMORE, Feb. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Our Kids Read (OKR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting literacy among underserved children, will celebrate the grand opening of the nation's first Free Diverse Children's Bookstore on Saturday, Feb. 15th, at 2025 10am-2pm Eastpoint Mall (Entrance #5, near Gabes, 7839 Eastpoint Mall, Baltimore, MD 21224).
In cities like Baltimore, where literacy rates among youth in underserved communities are low, access to books is crucial. Studies show that children who grow up with books at home tend to have higher literacy levels, better academic performance, and greater opportunities for future success. However, many families in inner-city areas lack access to books that reflect their culture and experiences. OKR aims to bridge this gap by providing free, diverse books that inspire and educate.
Thanks to support from Scholastic, the Baltimore Community Foundation and the Petrucci Family Foundation, the store will offer free books to children, ensuring access to literature that showcases various cultures and backgrounds. Every child attending the grand opening will receive three free books, helping to foster a love of reading from an early age.
"Every child deserves to see themselves in the books they read," said Jahmal Lake, Executive Director of Our Kids Read. "Through this initiative, we are fostering a love of reading and literacy in underserved communities. Literacy is not just about reading-it's about opportunity, empowerment, and a brighter future."
The grand opening will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, storytelling sessions, and special guests from the local community. The store will be open Fridays through Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.
