HOUSTON, Feb. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Southern University (TSU) proudly announces that its Professional Pilot program is now ranked among the top 50 aviation bachelor's degree programs in the nation. This milestone reflects TSU's commitment to excellence in training the next generation of pilots and aviation professionals and its growing reputation as a leader in aviation education.

"Just three years ago, TSU had a relatively new and unranked Professional Pilot program," said Dr. Terence Fontaine, Executive Director of Aviation. "Our students, faculty, and staff have worked collectively and tirelessly to earn this milestone recognition as one of the top 50 recognized Professional Pilot programs in the country. Since I arrived in 2018, the goal has been and remains for TSU to become the first HBCU with a top-25 aviation program. This ranking represents a significant step toward that goal."

The recognition comes during record-breaking enrollment in TSU's aviation program. The current enrollment of 180 students represents a second consecutive academic year of record enrollment. This surge underscores the increasing interest and trust in TSU's ability to prepare students for dynamic careers in the aviation industry.

TSU's aviation program has bolstered its reputation through strategic partnerships with industry leaders. Collaborations with Southwest Airlines and the United Airlines Aviate program offer students unparalleled opportunities for mentorship, internships, and career placement. These partnerships are vital in the program's efforts to equip graduates with the skills and experience to thrive in competitive aviation careers.

"The aviation program at Texas Southern is unique to Houston, and one of the most unique in the state of Texas," said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Carl B. Goodman. "As they continue to prepare the next generation of aviation professionals, from traditional aircraft pilots to drone pilots and beyond, we are excited about the growth the program is experiencing. Through our partnerships with Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, our students gain access to a pipeline of opportunities that will propel them into the industry with confidence and readiness. We are pleased to see the work recognized, and we look forward to continued growth."

The program offers concentrations in Aviation Management and Professional Pilot, providing students with a comprehensive education designed to meet the diverse demands of the aviation industry. With state-of-the-art facilities and a curriculum grounded in industry standards, TSU continues to set the bar for excellence in aviation education.

In addition to partnerships with major airlines, the program also boasts an ongoing partnership with the United States Air Force. This summer, it will host the Air Force JROTC Cadet program for the fifth consecutive year. Additionally, it is one of 45 aviation programs to hold the coveted Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) accreditation, widely considered the gold standard in aviation accreditation. Currently, construction is underway on a new hangar and office space at Ellington Airport where TSU Aviation will make its new home. The new space is in partnership with the City of Houston.
